Preparing for fishing
Fishing rods
First of all, you'll need a fishing rod. They differ in grade and price, and depending on the grade, different types of fishing shots. must be used. The difference between rods is the damage they deal to the fish while fishing.
Lures (bait)
Lures (bait) differ in color and come in Yellow, Green and Purple.
There are also 3 beginner lures (For Beginners). Their special feature is that they show you which skill to use at a given moment when you fish with them. The downside is that you can catch only low-quality fish. Either way, it's preferable to use them if you're fishing for the first time. Buy about 20 and give it a try.
Any type of lure can be used with a rod of any grade.
Lures, or rather their division by color, are meant to help you catch a certain kind of fish. According to their description, using Green you'll catch more Nimble fish, using Yellow — more Ugly fish, and using Purple — more Fat.
Fishing shots (soulshots, Fishing Shots)
The principle is the same as with shots for regular weapons: a fishing soulshot doubles the damage dealt to the fish. Be careful: if you use a skill that doesn't match the current moment, the fishing soulshot increases the fish's HP by the amount of damage you would have dealt using the "right" skill. In general, it's recommended to use fishing shots only for hard-to-catch fish.
Fishing soulshots can't be set to auto-use, unlike, for example, weapon soulshots.
A rod of each grade needs fishing soulshots of the matching level.
You can get fishing soulshots from the quest Quest for Fishing Shots.
Skills
Naturally, to fish you need skills. They don't require skill points (SP), but they cost money. They can be bought from Fishing Guide NPC in Grosery. To get the skills, choose "Please teach me to fish" in the NPC dialogue menu.
To fish you need four skills:
Fishing,
Pumping,
Reeling and
Fishing Expertise.
Fishing — an active skill with only 1 level.
Fishing Expertise
Fishing Expertise determines the color of the fish and the level of the monster you can catch:
- 1—3: Green Fish (Small, Normal, Big)
- 4—6: Jade Fish (Small, Normal, Big)
- 7—9: Blue Fish (Small, Normal, Big)
- 10—12: Yellow Fish (Small, Normal, Big)
- 13—15: Orange Fish (Small, Normal, Big)
- 16—18: Purple Fish (Small, Normal, Big)
- 19—21: Red Fish (Small, Normal, Big)
- 22—24: White Fish (Small, Normal, Big)
- 25—27: Black Fish (Small, Normal, Big)
In general, about 50% of the fish you catch will match the Expertise, 45 level you've learned, % will be a level lower, and about 5% a level higher.
Bottles that lower the Fishing Expertise level
Sometimes you need to lower the level of your own fishing skills, for example, to catch lower-level fishing materials. For this, you can buy special bottles from Fishing Guide Member that lower your Fishing Expertise. level
Pumping and Reeling
Pumping and Reeling are for dealing damage to the fish while reeling it in.
The higher the level of each, the more damage dealt to the fish, and the skill's reuse time also drops as the level rises. Be sure to remember that if the difference between the Pumping/Reeling c level and the Fishing Expertise level is more than 2 levels, you get a fishing penalty: the damage of each skill drops by 5% for each level of difference.
Skills acquired through fishing
While fishing, you can acquire new skills. To do this, sell what you catch to the NPC fisherman, the same one from whom you learn fishing skills. To get new skills you'll need
Proof of Catching a Fish, which you get by fishing or trading for common crafting resources.
Expand Common Craft — expands the common craft recipe book by 6 slots per level, up to 48 slots.
Expand Storage — increases private warehouse capacity by 6 slots per level, up to 48 new slots.
Expand Inventory — expands inventory capacity by 6 slots per level, up to 48 slots.
Expand Dwarven Craft (dwarves only, mainly Warsmith; the skill itself is learned from regular NPC trainers, not the fisherman) — expands the dwarf's recipe book capacity by 6 slots per level, up to 48 slots.
Expand Trade — expands the number of buy and sell slots in a private store by 1 per level, up to 3 slots more.
Catching fish
Fishing is very easy. If you're a newcomer, it's recommended to use beginner lures (For Beginners), since they show you on a special screen which skill to use at a given moment. With such lures, learning to fish won't be any trouble.
To start fishing, you need to find a deep spot. A deep spot is any puddle where a breath bar appears above your head.
Put the Fishing, Pumping and Reeling skills on your shortcut bar; if you're doing the fishing soulshot quest, put those on the bar too. You'll also need a slot with your weapon and main attack skills, since remember that you may catch a monster.
Stand on the shoreline facing the water. Use
Fishing — your character will start fishing. A new window will appear on the screen where you'll see your float. All you have to do now is reel in the fish with Pumping and Reeling.
There are several ways to decide which skill to use at a given moment. The most successful is considered to be watching the fish's HP bar:
- if the fish's HP bar stays put — use Pumping;
- if the fish's HP bar starts growing, i.e. the fish is recovering — Reeling.
If you choose the right skill, the HP bar drops by the amount of damage you deal. If the skill is chosen wrong, the HP increases by that many points.
If you brought the fish's HP to 0 before the allotted time ran out (30 seconds) — you've caught the fish.
Night fishing
Night fishing is available at night from 0:00 to 6:00 game time (you can find out the game time by typing the command /time or on the world map).
To catch better fish during night fishing, you'll need a Luminous/Night lure (bait).
However, these fish are also craftier than regular ones. When the fish's HP bar turns red, it means the fish is playing tricks. In this case the Pumping and Reeling skills have the opposite effect on the fish:
- if the fish's HP bar stays put — use Reeling;
- if the fish's HP bar starts growing, i.e. the fish is recovering — Pumping.
Gutting fish
Once you've caught enough fish, you can gut them (right-click). When gutting, there's a 50% chance you get nothing from it. Most of what you'll get is common crafting resources, which can be used in common crafting or exchanged for
Proof of Catching a Fish (fishing tickets) at the fisherman NPC. Keep in mind that there's a great opportunity to make high-level fishing resources. For example, from 4
Fish Oil (worth
4 Proof of Catching a Fish) you can make
Greater Fish Oil (worth
5 Proof of Catching a Fish).
