Description
Pagan Temple is a hunting ground for levels 76-80+ with aggressive mobs under Rune Township. This zone isn't visible on the map. Many of the mobs are undead, though not all.
The entrance to Pagan is in town, on the slope up to the clan hall area. It's the right staircase if you're coming up from town, and the left one if you're coming down from the CH or leaving the guild building. Go through the gate past the priest Flauron and jump down through the breach all the way to the bottom.
Here you have two ways – straight ahead is the guarded entrance to Pagan itself, and on the left is a long corridor that leads you back to the mage guild (handy if for some reason you want to return to town on foot without using an SoE)
Entrance to Pagan Temple
The entrance to the Pagan Temple is guarded by Gatekeeper Zombie. There are 6 of them; they're x8 and hit far and hard. So I strongly advise not to "try your luck in a fight with them", but to take the quest from the priest Eliyah in the mage guild on the first floor of the Rune temple The Truth Beyond the Gate - available from level 73.
Basically, if you don't plan to go beyond the Anteroom hall, or you have someone to open the other doors in the temple, you can stop here. The guards at the entrance will have no more complaints about you, and you'll be able to open Tample Gate – the first door into Pagan.
If you want to get further on your own, return to Flauron and talk to him again: you'll get the quest Through the Gate Once More - available from level 73.
The inner layout of Pagan Temple
Entrance
We've already described the temple entrance above. The only thing to add is that the whole area from the staircase to Triol's Mirror is a peace zone, i.e. a town.
To enter the temple, just click Triol's Mirror, which stands in the room with the guards on the right (you don't need to talk to it like a regular GK, to the joy of daredevils who run into Pagan without the quest). The mirror is also clickable from the other side – you'll get back into the room with the guards.
After teleporting inside, you end up in a long corridor leading to Temple Gate. This is already General Filds, in case you feel like fighting. If you have the quest, the right statue by the door will open the entrance for you. If not, use unlock.
Behind the door is a large hall with doors into Anteroom. The hall has 6 non-aggressive social x4 undead. They're needed mainly to get
Anteroom Key, since they respawn very slowly and you're unlikely to level on them. On the opposite side of the hall is the Chapel Door it opens the same way - with the right gatekeeper or unlock)
Anterooms
Anteroom is a double row of interconnected rooms. They're separated from the main hall by a door that opens with the same anteroom's keys (I've never seen them fail) or unlock (if you really want to use Silent move in a half-empty room with non-aggressive mobs – have fun, it won't affect opening the doors in any way).
These rooms are separated from the hall by doors, and from each other and from the second row of rooms by Penance Guard (undead, x1/2). They don't move, but they'll aggro if you get right up to them (regardless of whether you have the quest, and invisibility doesn't fool them either). It's for these rooms that there's a limit on the number of characters – if there are six or more of you, when the mobs aggro, one or more people get thrown back into the hall.
There are no mobs in the little corridors of the side rooms (between the door and the room); in the corridors of the corner rooms there can be 1 to 3 zombies – also non-aggressive and social. The mobs in these rooms have a rather funny aggression system – they have a ringleader: Triol's Layperson - an x5 humanoids. As long as this mob is alive and in the room, all the room's mobs are its minions and will attack you as a pile. But if you lead it out the door into the hall and leave it there, only two aggressive mobs remain in the room, and leveling there becomes much easier (until someone in the hall lets Triol back in or kills him). Triol, if led more than 4 tile squares from the door, teleports back into the room.
You can't lead Triol out of the second row of rooms, and there are three of them there. So there it's better to try to kill him right on respawn. You can level in the Anterooms with basically any group – mage, archer, melee, with the matching support. Bishops and EEs level solo.

Chapel Room
Behind Chapel Door (opened with Unlock, Chapel Key or the right GK statue; from the other side it can also be opened by the GK) begins a wide corridor with the entrances to Chapel rooms. itself on the sides. Normally this corridor is empty, but when the RB respawns it fills with mobs.
Chapel Room is a triple row of rooms, separated from each other and from the corridor not by doors but by Chapel Guard They also don't move, but aggro if you get right up to them and shoot fire (quite far and painfully). The guards aren't social with the mobs in the room.
Each room has 3 humanoids (Triol's Priest with two Believer) and 4-6 undead. If you kill the priest, the believers disappear fairly quickly on their own, and vice versa – if you kill the believers, the Priest doesn't summon new ones. The mobs have a fairly large aggro radius and can indeed come running from the next room. You can also level here with any group without particular problems. A healer is desirable. A Bishop (EE) had better not go here solo – the same 6 undead as in the anteroom, and you'll wear yourself out keeping the Priest asleep.
Darkness Room
At the end of the corridor in Chapel, on both sides, there are Door of Darkness. They open either with Unlock or Key of Darkness.
Darkness room is a row of rooms separated from each other by corridors (this time without guards). There's a huge hall divided only by partitions, and here you can pull such a crowd that you'll regret it. You can train here, but with some skill — half the mobs won't run after the puller but will stupidly drain him, so you need to quickly duck around some corner.
The closer to the balcony, the fewer undead monsters and the more humanoid priests (x4-x5). The same dark attacks, plus bleed and drain. When the RB respawns, pillars appear in the rooms that cast a mass bleed (fairly weak). You can level with a full party of 9 people. A healer is a must-have. A SwS is very desirable. If the party's DPS is low, someone who keeps the mobs asleep is also useful – otherwise the drain will wear you down.
Altar
From the central Darkness room there are two ways up to the balcony. And on the balcony itself is the altar with a huge statue, visible even from the chapel hall, and the RB Andreas Van Halter. The boss respawns in about a day. Drops per l2wh – EAC, MA robe pieces and Demon Circlet.
Normally the whole balcony area is empty, but when the RB respawns the balcony also fills with mobs (many x1/4 and a few x4).
Presumably they all need to be killed for the inner doors to the altar and the RB to open. When the doors are open, an announcement goes out in shout:
When someone is farming the RB inside, the ways up to the balcony from the Darkness are closed by Altar Entrance doors, which can't be opened with Unlock (unsuitable terms). The assumption that these doors open at some specific game time wasn't confirmed.
Without wasting time on all these corridor hordes, go to the balcony under Shadow. And there, cut down everything you find - it's very fast. When there are no mobs left on the balcony, the doors to the balcony close and the doors to the altar open, and you watch a short cutscene about a sacrifice. After that you can kill the RB. He's nothing particularly hard. Among the troubles he causes - a mass bleed (which, in principle, you can calmly ignore) and periodic mob spawns on the platform. We led the RB into a corner, so most of these mobs never found us, but the RB himself periodically tried to teleport away from the tank.
How to survive in the Pagan Temple?
All mobs in Pagan are weak to sacred attacks, resist dark attacks and use dark attacks themselves. So it's logical to assume you need dark resistance in your armor and the holy attribute in your weapon. However, none of this is mandatory for leveling in Pagan, even in the Darkness. The standard set of resist buffs and songs/dances is enough. DDs had better take the precautions usual for leveling spots with aggressive group mobs. Healers - watch debuffs carefully (but those are the usual survival rules for leveling anywhere).
The only thing that will make life much easier for everyone, from you to the healer, is decent jewelry for your grade, and even then a safe enchant is enough. Otherwise there are no special recommendations for leveling in this particular place. If all party members have their heads and hands in the right place – your leveling in Pagan will go fast and smoothly.
Why visit the Pagan Temple
Because you have to level somewhere. Besides, this location is convenient for those whose clan hall is in Rune. The quest in MoS is much better in terms of reward (you'll agree that getting an EAC for 400 items is easier than for 2k). LS 76 drop much better in the Hero Rift.
