Territory Battles/Practical Guide

Registration
First choose a town. We signed up for Giran because our clan hall is there, but in principle you can choose any castle's territory. We can look at who owns the castle and take their side as the strongest, but I would recommend every clan member sign up for the same territory so you can party up and help each other. Most clans and individual players register for Goddard, so our personal recommendation is: sign up for Goddard.
If the clan leader registers, the whole clan is registered automatically, but you can also take part individually. The clan leader or an individual player must talk to Mercenary Captain NPC in the chosen town. To sign up:
- Open the dialog with Mercenary Captain NPC
- Click Territory Battle Information
- Click the "Merc. Request" button if you are signing up alone, or "Clan request" if you are the clan leader and want to sign up the whole clan. To avoid political squabbles, all members of our clan register individually as mercenaries and use the disguise scroll (described below).
- The buttons change to "cancel" if you check back and want to cancel your personal or clan registration.
- If you register too early, it may not work. You cannot register earlier than a few days before the siege.
Territory sieges take place every 2 weeks on Saturdays and start at 8PM CST. Registration ends at 6PM CST.
Quest Mercernary Captain
You can take the territory siege quest from Mercenary Captain. You should both take the quest and register for the siege to get the most out of it. The NPC will give you "Ordinary Mercenary Certificate". To complete the first part of the quest you must:
- Kill 10 players registered for various territories (if you are in a party, you don't have to kill them yourself. If any member of your party kills someone, your kill counter goes up).
- Destroy an enemy catapult (it can be the catapult in any fortress belonging to one of the territories). You don't need siege ballistas for this; just keep hitting it until it falls apart. From our experience on 5/30/09, it follows that to get quest progress it's enough to be in the command channel with those who destroyed the catapult. Not every fortress on the map has a catapult, only those that belong to a castle (that is, border fortresses have no catapults). Each fortress has only one catapult.
You must complete the quest in the following order: kill 10 players, then destroy the catapult. This means you can't destroy the catapult first and only then kill 10 players.
- Return to Mercenary Captain and get "Elite Mercenary Certificate" from him. This lets you buy more things from Mercenary Captain. The differences between the rewards from elite and top elite mercenary are minimal. You can buy transformation scrolls similar to the regular ones but giving more hp/mp/cp than the simple ones. You'll also be able to buy the CP. talisman. It's unclear whether belonging to elite or top elite mercenary means you get more of the badge used to buy the prizes at sieges.
- Make sure you also talk to Territory Manager after Mercenary Captain. I can't remember whether he gives a quest before the siege, but make sure you use every option he offers, because he is the one who gives you badges after the siege.
- After completing the quest from Mercenary Captain and receiving Elite Mercenary Certificate, talk to him again and take the quest for Top Elite Mercenary Certificate. To get this certificate, your party must score 30 kills in the siege and destroy 2 catapults.
Preparing for battle
Alternative appearance and disguise. At Mercenary Captain, by clicking "Buy regular mercenary items", you can buy scrolls of transformation into other races, as well as the disguise scroll. The scrolls last for the whole siege; they can be used 20 minutes before the siege, and their effect ends 30 minutes after it is over. The effects of these scrolls do NOT disappear on death.
- Race transformation scrolls change your race for 30 minutes. During this time you look the part, and your HP/MP are calculated based on your level. You get only one skill, an overhit attack, plus the skill to cancel the transformation. I think by all accounts these scrolls are a waste of money. You can do much more with your original skills. If you are elite or top elite mercenary, the scrolls you buy give you more hp/mp/cp; but again, using your normal skills with only the disguise scroll is preferable, since it also gives a hp/mp/cp increase if you buy it while being elite or top elite.
- The disguise scroll hides your name and clan tag for the whole siege (20 minutes before and 30 after), but it does not show in the buff list. When you use this scroll, your name in general and party chat shows as "<territory> mercenary", so it's hard to tell who said what and who is who. This scroll doesn't change your appearance or your skills. It can be used together with a race transformation scroll. If you use the disguise scroll, you won't get reputation for kills, but you will keep getting rating for being in the siege territory as usual.
The battle
As long as you are registered for the territory war and are in the battle zone, you don't lose experience on death. However, we ran into some players who didn't want to play by the rules and killed others as PKs, counting on a win.
As in regular sieges, simple resurrection scrolls and skills cannot be used on dead players (unless, of course, your clan leader took the time to set up a headquarters), so there's no need to ask to be ressed. Since you don't lose experience anyway, if you are not far from town and have Noblesse on, it's easier to go to town and run back.
Don't go alone; it's a sure path to death. Go with a party. There is strength in numbers. Mages and archers definitely have the advantage in these sieges.
Your goal (not the quest one) is as follows:
- Defend the supplies (they are in the castle); as a defender of the territory, the castle gates will open for you. Don't let the enemy capture the supplies (they are shown as a gold quest button on the map).
- Defend your territory's flag (ward). I think these flags are behind the throne room, where the castle seal is usually cast, but that's only a guess. If the enemy captures this flag, they have to carry it to their own castle, so you must catch up with them, kill them, take the flag back and return it to its place (the location of your flag is shown on the map as a shield emblem, so it's easy to find).
- Capture an enemy territory flag. Basically, you can go to any castle except the one of your own territory. It seems you can get something else in enemy fortresses besides the quest catapult kill, but I can't say for sure. (Enemy flags and fortresses with catapults are also marked on your map.)
Why capture enemy flags? The point is that on Sunday the castles that lost their flags will be weakened, while the castles that captured flags get offensive and defensive bonuses and a boost to base attributes such as INT/DEX and so on. In fact, castles can steal flags from each other and from any other territory.
After the battle
Talk to Territory Manager after the siege. Click "quest", and he will ask whether you want the reward right now or later. Take it right away; there's no point in waiting. He will give you your badges.
From a retrospective look at our parties, sieges and the amount of badges each player received, I figured out what you need to do to get as much as possible.
- More kills. This is the most expected factor. Kills made by the party are counted, not by the command channel members or by each player separately. Apparently the amount of badges received goes up with every tenth kill made by your party.
- More time in siege zones. This is the second most expected factor. Again, what counts is the time your party spends in siege zones. It may be tied to the number of kills mentioned above, but it's hard to separate the two, since you're actually killing all the time you're in the siege zones.
- Achieving siege objectives. If you were in a party that (1) attacked a fortress, (2) destroyed a catapult, (3) attacked another castle, (4) defended your castle, (5) captured a flag, then parties that completed more objectives get more badges.
- People in the same party get the same amount of badges, +/- 5 from the average. It depends on the party, not on individual merit or on the command channel members.
You have only a few hours to collect your reward. Some players said they decided to wait until the end of the day and couldn't get it.
Features
If you click Mercenary Captain, then territory status, then the region status tab, you will see how many clans and how many individual mercenaries have registered for your territory. The more of them, the better, since there will be people who can help you if something happens.
Territory Manager offers goods that you can buy for badges + adena. S-Grade and A-Grade armor, weapons and jewelry with special effects are just part of the range. Most people buy chests that contain belts and bags. These items sell well on the market, and you can make a profit on them. True, these chests don't always drop items; they can open empty. From experience, the chance is roughly 33%.
If you talk to territory manager, you can also use your badges to become noblesse (100 badges), even if your subclass hasn't reached level 75 yet! You can also buy a strider of any type for 60 badges.
To succeed in territory wars, I'd recommend that more mages and archers go there, and in general more registered people won't hurt. Make sure no one in your party or team is inside a fortress before the siege starts; then you'll get the catapult. Each territory has only one catapult, so few people will be able to complete the quest, even though a single destruction completes the quest for everyone in the command channel. I scouted the (non-border) fortresses captured by weak clans, and those were the ones we chose as targets, since we could quickly break into the fortress and destroy the catapult that others had already been hitting before us.
We also got quite a lot of experience and sp at random intervals, for unknown reasons: either we unknowingly completed part of the quest, or simply because we were in the siege territory.
Some said you can get badges just by registering for the siege and sitting in town; others said you need at least to be in the siege territory or in the same party with those who are there. This needs to be checked.
The NPCs claim that if you change the territory you fight for, you lose all your previous reward. Apparently this means that if you fought for Giran and decided to register for Goddard at the next siege, you'd lose the badges from Giran. Players say this isn't so at all; you keep your whole reward wherever you sign up. However, you can buy prizes in Giran only with badges from Giran, and in Goddard only with those from Goddard; and buying Noblesse takes 100 badges of a single town.
