Description
Execution Grounds — the Execution Grounds. Several years ago, an uprising broke out among the peasants over excessive taxes and harsh laws. They refused to work and began forming squads to overthrow their ruler. Duke Ashton, then the ruler of Town of Dion, sent an armed squad to the peasants, led by the knight Sir Kalibus. He was to give the peasants an ultimatum, but because Sir Kalibus himself came from a peasant family, he went over to the rebels' side.
So Ashton decided to fix the situation in an especially cruel way: he ordered the rebels and their families to be seized and executed, and set about doing just that. The battles were long and brutal; all prisoners were killed with particular cruelty. Ashton's executioner was the bloodthirsty Guillotine, who took hundreds of lives with his jagged scythe. In the heat of battle, when Ashton's victory was already near, Sir Kalibus still managed to slay Guillotine, who was cursed and doomed to wander forever.
Kalibus himself was captured and executed along with his wife. But before his death he uttered a terrible curse, after which life in these lands became even worse. The undead began to roam the former estates and fields — risen corpses of peasants thirsting for revenge. The forest that grew nearby turned into a terrifying place, now home to vicious trees and bloodthirsty bats that were also touched by the curse.
There is a legend connected with this place:
Long ago, when Town of Dion was ruled by a lord who later executed many people (including those who lived in the territory of Execution Grounds), he decided to use the tribute collected from the inhabitants to hire a famous band of mercenaries. The band's name has been forgotten — either the Iron Dogs, or the Iron Clubs, or something else, excuse my early sclerosis. The tribute was collected, and four renowned warriors close to the lord were to deliver it to him.
But one of them, not wanting the needless deaths of peasants that hiring these cutthroats would undoubtedly bring, persuaded his comrades to steal the gold and hide it. And so they agreed. Later, as the instigator himself tells it, he realized that the gold was cursed. Terrible misfortunes befell all four guards. He was the luckiest of them. Hiding from the lord's wrath, he fled to the lands of Gludin Village, changed his name and way of life, turning from a famous and respected warrior into a mercenary guarding rich people on their travels (this man stands among the dwarves, near the teleport from Gludin to the Wasteland).
His second comrade was gnawed to death by ratmen while returning to Dion. The third decided to flee to Town of Oren but died at the claws of the Lizardmen. The last one joined the rebels in the lands of Dion. Some time later he was caught along with some of the rebels, and the lord decided to stage a public execution. The once famous and brave warrior was hanged from a tree in front of a crowd. However, the black magic coming from the cursed gold did not end there. At night the tree with the corpse hanging from it came to life and began wandering around the area, terrifying people with its mere appearance. That is how the hangman trees appeared in the Execution Grounds.
